William H. "Slugger" Hinman, 80, of Crisfield, died on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Harley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke City.
Born in Crisfield on January 26, 1927, he was the son of the late Emma Trader Hinman and Samuel Preston Hinman.
An Army Veteran of World War II, he served with the 88th Blue Devil Division in Europe. He later joined the Company "L" 115th Infantry Division of the Maryland National Guard.
He was a tractor trailer driver for the former Star Baking Company in Crisfield for several years, after which he continued working as a heavy equipment operator for Swift's Excavating in Crisfield. Upon occasion he substituted for Somerset County School Bus Transportation.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Evans Hinman; two daughters, Michelle Hinman Pruitt and husband Royce, and Donelle Hinman Hall and husband Rudy, all of Crisfield; two sons, Samuel M. Hinman of Crisfield, and Preston W. Hinman and wife Faye of Kingston; a step-son, Tim McDorman, Jr.; a sister, Lois Hinman Matthews of Crisfield; two brothers, Bobby Hinman of Crisfield, and Don Hinman of Florida; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Five brothers and sisters, Audrey, Mary, Sammy, Harold, and Dicky preceded him in death.
Graveside funeral services and interment will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 2:30 PM at the American Legion Cemetery in Crisfield where the U.S. Army will conduct military honors. The Rev. Carol Carlson will officiate. There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Home Missions Fund of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 39 W. Main St., Crisfield, MD 21817.
