Waverly Wilson Evans, 89, of Tylerton, Smith Island, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield.
Born on Tylerton June 8, 1926, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Amanda Virginia Marsh Evans.
He was a retired waterman, and a US Army veteran of World War II. Following his retirement, he obtained his Captain's license offering fishing charters, and also was a tour guide for the island.
A member of Union United Methodist Church on Tylerton, he was a Sunday School Teacher, Lay Leader, Choir member, and a member of the Smith Island Men's Quartet. He spent many late Saturday nights studying the Bible at the kitchen table to prepare for his Sunday School Lessons. He was a man of few words until he spoke about the Lord. He could keep you enthralled with the depth and breadth of his knowledge and understanding of the Bible. No fancy words, just plain, simple facts stated humbly.
He was a member of the Chesapeake Masonic Lodge #147 AF&AM in Crisfield, Charter member and first chief of the Tylerton Fire Department, member and past president of the former Tylerton Lions Club, member of the former Full Gospel Business Men's Association, and was inducted into the Watermen's Hall of Fame during the annual Soft Shell Festival. He was also a member of the Smith Island Baseball Team, traveling for games all over the Eastern Shore. He adored fishing, coffee and figs, and his shanty cats. He was also an accomplished folk artist and wood worker.
A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruth Bell Dryden Evans of Tylerton; four daughters, Sandy Tyler and husband Bryan of Marion, Connie Dize and husband Ed of Rhodes Point, Janet Evans of Ewell, and Margaret "Missy" Evans of Tylerton; two grandchildren, Kim Evans and wife Lou Anne of Salisbury and Gina Tyler of Marion; two great-grandchildren, Sean Evans and Luke Evans; a brother, Jack Evans and wife Dixie of Fredericka, DE; and nieces and nephews, Robin and David Sharp of Felton, Cindy and Jay Ansalvish of Lincoln, and Jack and Anita Evans of Dover; and several great-nieces and nephews.
