Vernon E. Tawes, Jr., 99, of Princess Anne and formerly of Crisfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Alice B. Tawes Nursing Home. He had resided in Princess Anne for the past 20 years.

Born in Crisfield on March 6, 1927, he was the son of the late Vernon E. Tawes, Sr. and Cecil Clark Tawes.

A U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II, Vernon was a self-employed building contractor for more than 45 years. He later worked as a supervisor for Tom Ruark Construction for 20 years.

Vernon was a lifelong member of Crisfield Church of God and a life member of the former VFW Post #8274. He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan.

He is survived by his wife, Irmgard Tawes of Parkton, Maryland; his children, Gary Tawes and wife Peggy of Florida, Lynn Mitchell and husband Alan of East New Market, Matthew Tawes and wife Maria of Crisfield, and step-daughter, Susan Crocetti and husband Gene of Parkton, Maryland; grandchildren, Kevin Gibson of Florida, Chris Tawes of Massachusetts, Gene Crocetti, IV of Baltimore, and Alexander Sterling Crocetti of New York; great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Karson and Ella; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Byrd Tawes; his step-daughter, Barbara Sterling; and his siblings, Betty Sterling, Randall Tawes, Lawrence Tawes, Linwood Tawes, Benson Tawes, Doris McDorman, Mary Frances Elliott, Idella Tyler, twins siblings that passed in childhood, Benson and Doris, and a baby brother, Vernon.

Urn interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. No services are planned at this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crisfield Church of God, 134 Maryland Avenue, Crisfield, MD 21817.
