Obituary

Sandra Covington Riggin, 87, of Crisfield, Maryland passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the Alice B. Tawes Nursing and Rehabilitation facility in Crisfield, Maryland, after a month long illness and a courageous battle.

Born Sandra Brooks Covington in Baltimore, Maryland on March 5, 1937, she he was the daughter of the late Durward Quentin Covington and Eleanor Rice Covington.

Sandy lived her youngest years in Baltimore, moving to Crisfield in her early teens as a result of her father's funeral business moving to the location of the now Bradshaw & Son's Funeral Home. She briefly attended nursing school after graduation from Crisfield High School, quickly realized that was not for her, and then attended clerical school. Sandy worked for a few years at Crisfield City Hall before taking a long time position at The Crisfield Times. She later retired from the newspaper business and moved to New Port Richey, Florida to assist in the care of her beloved father, D.Q. Covington. Sandy returned to Crisfield after her father's passing, achieved a real estate license, and worked as a realtor for several years before retirement.

Sandy dearly enjoyed beaches, travel, animals and pets, good food, dessert and sweets, and having great times, trips, and laughs with her many friends over the years. She often traveled to Florida to spend time with her parents, brother Ron, son Steve, and grandson Steve Jr and families. Sandy had a great sense of humor and loved and often looked out for her family and close friends. In her later years, she had taken the hobby of genealogy, traced much of her family and ancestral history, and traveled to quite a few graves, homes, and places of interest.

Surviving Sandy is a son, William Roy Riggin, Jr. and his wife Kim of Salisbury, grandsons, Nathan Riggin of Salisbury and Steven Long Jr. of Palm Bay, Florida, her brother, Ronald Covington of New Port Richey, Florida, and daughter in law Barbara Long of Palm Bay, Florida.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Steven Douglas Long.

A memorial service will be held on a sunny beach at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are requested to be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Memorial Giving at 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, stjude.org.
