Obituary

Samuel James Lewis Jr, 66, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at the VA Medical Hospital in Baltimore Maryland after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born in Cape Charles, Va., on June 9, 1942, he was the son of the late Samuel J., Sr. and Mary Lewis.

A 1960 graduate of Cape Charles High School, he joined the United States Navy in 1961 as a computer technician. He also worked for the C&P Telephone company until his retirement in 1988.

Mr. Lewis was an avid Chess player, but perhaps one of his favorite past times was working with the Crisfield Little League serving several years as the coach for the Crisfield Rotary Club. Mr. Lewis also was very involved with the Boy Scouts, serving for 15 years in Crisfield, Princess Anne, and Salisbury.

In his later years, Mr. Lewis was more widely known for his book, "Cape Charles: A Railroad Town", published in 2004.

A great friend and inspiring dad, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Scott Lewis and his wife Sherry Lynn, of Delmar and Tracy Mark Lewis and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth, of Hebron; two grandchildren, Emmaline Katherine Lewis of Delmar and Kevin Michael Lewis of Hebron.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Mary Ellen Wells Lewis, on October 24, 2008.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Veracity Church, 829 E. William Street, Salisbury Maryland, located next to the VFW. Pastor Mark White will officiate.
