RITA EVANS CROCKETT, 93, of Crisfield, died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield.
Born on Rhodes Point, Smith Island, on January 10, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Effie Evans. She married James Edward Crockett, moved to Crisfield, and started working at Estelle Bradshaw's Beauty Shop. Later, they moved to Linden, New Jersey where her husband started working at General Motors. While in New Jersey, she worked as a school guard and as a pharmacist assistant. After her husband's retirement, the couple moved back to Crisfield where she started working at the Somerset County Developmental Center and was a caregiver for the elderly. Her husband preceded her in death on July 20, 1976.
She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Crisfield where she sang in the choir and was active in Circle 1 and the UMW. She was a 50-year member and Past Worthy Matron of the former Chesapeake Chapter #28 Order of Eastern Star, and was a member of the Women's Civic Club, both Crisfield.
Rita loved people and always looked for the good in them. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and taking trips with the AARP.
She is survived by a daughter, Marlene Poole and husband Floyd of Marion Station; two grandchildren, Kevin Marsh and wife Betty and Dixie Walker and husband Ward, all of Crisfield; three great-grandchildren, Jamie Coulbourne, Brittany Walker and Amber Walker, all of Crisfield; two brothers, Norman Evans of Mississippi and Gordon Evans of Reedville, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Austin, Milton and Calvin Evans, Evelyn Brimer and Delia Tyler.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 2 PM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Bob Daniels and grandson, Kevin Marsh, will officiate. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
