Obituary

Richard A. Puffinburger, 79, of Crisfield and formerly of Beltsville, Maryland, died Friday, July 17, 2015 at McCready Memorial Hospital.

Born in Big Pool, Maryland on October 8, 1935, he was a son of the late Delbert and Evelyn Hovermale Puffinburger. His wife of 56 years, Virginia Lee Shipway Puffinburger, preceded him in death March 2, 2014. He had been making his home in Crisfield since 1977.

Affectionately known as "Dick" or "Puff", he was owner and operator of Puff's Place in Crisfield for over 33 years and his business was his life. He enjoyed all of his customers and made many lasting friendships over the years.

Serving his community was also something he was extremely passionate about. Puff was very active in the Lions Club, joining Beltsville Lions Club in 1961, and in 1982 became a charter member of the Crisfield Lions Club. During his years of service with the Crisfield Lions Club he served as president three non-consecutive terms, secretary, was treasurer for many years and was their first Melvin Jones Fellow- the highest award given to a Lions member for humanitarian work. In addition, he served as Zone Chairman of Lions District 22B. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Ducks Unlimited, Somerset County Republican Club, Crisfield Elks Lodge #1044, Crisfield Area Chamber of Commerce, and was an active supporter and sponsor of various youth sports. He also served in the Army National Guard in his earlier years.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, animals, and he had a great appreciation for area watermen and the environment. He also obtained his pilot's license and enjoyed flying his own airplane.

Puff was a quiet giver and supporter to many organizations and countless others in need and wished for nothing in return. He will be missed by the entire community of Crisfield.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Donald Poffenberger and wife June of Lynn Haven, Florida, Anna Clingerman of West River, MD, Theodore Puffinburger of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Grace Puffinberger of Hagerstown, MD, Beverly Shipway of Flintstone, MD, Charles Puffinberger and wife Betty of Lengby, Minnesota, and Robin Dolly and husband Kenneth of Marietta, Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Funeral services officiated by the Reverends Paul Holland and Terry Riggin will be held Friday, July 24, 2015 at 2 PM at Immanuel U. M. Church where a viewing will be from 12-2. Interment will follow in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Crisfield Lions Club, P.O. Box 128 or Immanuel U. M. Church Memorial Fund, c/o Bob Bradshaw, 306 W. Main Street, both Crisfield, MD 21817.
