R. Elaine Hoffman, 93, of Pocomoke and formerly of Crisfield, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at Hartley Hall Nursing Home.
Born in Crisfield on February 4, 1929, she was a daughter of the late George William and Lyda Geneva Owens Hoffman.
When Elaine was eight, her father moved the family to Elizabeth, New Jersey, where she graduated from Battin High School for Girls in 1947. Her and her sister, Dolly, traveled from Quebec to Havana and afterwards, returned to 404 Myrtle Street in Crisfield with their family and started a new life.
Elaine worked 17 years for the MAC center of Somerset County starting out in the Princess Anne center then to the Crisfield center, where she retired in 1991. She was a Secretary at each location and was called upon to sing as well.
After retiring, she worked at Prudential Insurance Company. When she worked there, they sponsored a road show called, the "Spotlighters," for military bases and hospitals all along the East Coast. As a member of the cast, she was a singer. They entertained from Connecticut to Maryland. During this time, despite how busy it got at times, she also attended night school at Rutgers University for two years.
Elaine was a wonderful writer and had always loved poetry. Over the years she wrote three books, Eastern Shore Memories, The Way It Was, and Elaine's Quatrains and Other Rhymes. She also wrote the column for the Somerset Herald for many years.
She is survived by her best friend, Mary Hall of Crisfield; and several cousins.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dolly Rae Hoffman who passed in 2011; and her best friend, Jimmy Hall.
