Ralph Dewey Crockett, 64, of Tangier, died Monday, July 2, 2012 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born on Tangier July 16, 1947, he was a son of the late Merrill Ray and Ruth Parks Crockett.
Dewey, as he was affectionately known, was a 1965 graduate of Tangier High School. He attended Ferrum College and the University of Virginia prior to entering into the ministry. He graduated from the University of MD Eastern Shore in 1980, and Trinity Theological Seminary in 1982. He was appointed to the Pungoteague United Methodist Charge in 1969 ministering to Evergreen, Harborton and Pungoteague until 1973. He was then appointed to the Deal Island United Methodist Charge and ministered to Rock Creek, Deal Island and Wenona until 1986. He also held Evangelistic and interim Pastorships in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia over the past 44 years.
Following his ministry, Dewey became an educator at Tangier Combined School from 1984 until his retirement in 2010, teaching social studies and served as assistant principal.
One of the great loves of his life was being the funeral home representative for Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home and Williams Funeral Homes when there were funeral services on Tangier Island. He took great pride in helping many families on the island at their time of need.
In addition, Dewey was the Mayor of Tangier Island for 16 years, and was one of the main spear-headers in obtaining Emergency Medical Services for Tangier residents.
Dewey loved his Lord, his family, his students, and his friends.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of almost 41 years, Jean Tappan Crockett of Tangier; his beloved son, Daniel Carlton Crockett of Tangier; two brothers, Allen Ray Crockett and wife Jeanette of Tangier and Dennis James Crockett of Round Hill, VA; a sister, Mary Sue Williams of Round Hill; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Etta Crockett.
On Thursday, July 5, 2012, friends may call at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield from 7-9 PM where a time of sharing will begin at 8.
On Friday, July 6, 2012, friends may call at Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Tangier from 7-9 PM.
Funeral services officiated by Strickland Crockett, Duane Crockett, and Rev. Patricia Stover will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 2 PM at Swain Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Crockett Family Cemetery.
