Obituary

MELBA MAY OWENS SLIPPER, born in Crisfield, Maryland 23 July 1909, daughter of Warren Edwin and Augusta Sterling Owens; sibling of Edwin 'Ed', James 'Earl', and Sarah Owens Lawson, met her Lord on 13 March 2009, at the age of 99 years and 8 months.

She is survived by her only son James 'Jim' L. Slipper, Jr. and his wife Iris; 4 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren: Michael, Deborah, Cary and his son Ryan, Donna Slipper Moran and her daughters AnnMarie Boone and Jessica Pagoria ; a sister-in-law, Elsie (wife of deceased Earl Owens); and Madelyn (wife of deceased Ed Owens); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Melba left Crisfield after graduating High School in 1926 to attend the Bryant and Stratton Business College in Baltimore. In June of 1929, she married James L. Slipper, Sr., son of German immigrants from Baltimore, with whom she had one son. She eventually became a full time employee of The Glen L. Martin Aircraft Company where for over 30 years she wired and installed the electrical panels in their aircraft, to include the Mace Missile.

Melba was a member of the early Asbury United Methodist Church in Crisfield. In Baltimore she was an active member of the Broadway Methodist Church, which at the time was affiliated with Goodwill. Later she moved to the Dundalk area and was a member of the Patapsco Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school Superintendent; and represented Patapsco Church for a number of years at the Methodist Conferences. She did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels; she visited local nursing homes and knitted booties for the residents there. She also knitted small hats for newborns at the hospitals. She was always active in all facets of the Methodist Women's Missionary Circles. At the time of her demise, she was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church on Kent Island where she had been living since the early 1980s.

There will be no funeral services as her last gift of 'service' was to will her body to medical science. She was a wonderful Mother to Jim and Iris and a beloved grandmother. She was a godly woman who served her Lord and her fellow man.

Memorials may be sent to HOSPICE of Queen Anne's Inc.; 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, Maryland 21617.
