Marguerite Pruitt Luce, 92, of Crisfield, died Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Chesapeake Cove Assisted Living in Crisfield, Maryland. Born on May 12, 1925, on Tangier Island, Virginia, she was the daughter of Wyatt Gladstone Pruitt and Mary Olevia Crockett Pruitt.
Marguerite graduated from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with a bachelor's degree in education and later received a master's degree in education from George Washington University.
She was married to former teacher and railway owner Lorain D. Luce until his death in 1972. Marguerite served for more than 30 years as a teacher, principal and supervisor with the Somerset County Board of Education until her retirement in 1983. After her retirement, she taught GED classes and tutored local children.
She was a longtime member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Crisfield. Marguerite enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, and spending time with the "Golden Girls". She was active in the community and a member of many civic and charitable groups including the Samuel Chase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Delta Kappa Gamma.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Docia Pruitt Lupton and a brother-in-law, Samuel Lupton. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Luce Adkins (Jim) of Salisbury, Maryland; her brother, William Joshua Pruitt (Paula) of Stuart, Florida; and her brother-in-law, Frank Luce of Gowanda, New York. Marguerite is also survived by her nephews, Brian Pruitt and Alan Pruitt and their families of Florida and Paul Luce, Joseph Luce and Jeremy Luce and their families of New York; two special cousins, Rosalie Pruitt of Tangier Island and Kathy R. Crockett of Crisfield; and a lifelong friend, Ruth "Tix" Crockett of Onley, Virginia.
A funeral service officiated by the Reverend Charles Jacobson will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 2 PM Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Sunny Ridge Memorial Park, Crisfield.
