IN LOVING MEMORY OF
M. William
"Bill" Ward
April 10, 1928 – March 19, 2021
M. William "Bill" Ward, 92, of Crisfield, died Friday, March 19, 2021 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home.
Born in Crisfield April 10, 1928, he was the son of the late Milton E. and Kathryn McDorman Ward Goldsborough. His wife of 64 years, E. Argene Ward, preceded him in death this past January 14, 2021.
Mr. Ward was a United States Navy World War II veteran. While in the US Navy during his voyage to Antarctica, he earned his status of trusty Shellback at the Line Crossing Ceremony, "Order of Neptune", as his ship crossed the equator. He enjoyed telling friends and family of that story during his service, and he remained a very patriotic person his entire lifetime.
Mr. Ward began his career with the Maryland State Comptroller's Office as a chauffeur for then Comptroller of Maryland, J. Millard Tawes, who later served as Governor of Maryland. Bill retired from the State Comptroller's Office as Regional Manager of the Income Tax Division. Following retirement, he was appointed Somerset County Commissioner after the death of his son, Glenn, who was currently serving as County Commissioner. He went on to serve three additional terms for a total of 14 years of service to Somerset County.
He was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he served on various committees, was member and past president of the former Crisfield Kiwanis Club, member of the former McCready Hospital Board during the inception of the new hospital in the 1980's, served on the Somerset County Election Board and Somerset County Homeless Board, and was a member of the Stanley Cochrane Post #16 American Legion.
Bill was an avid sports fan and enjoyed all Maryland based sports teams including the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens and the University of MD Terps. He loved sitting on his porch and spending time in his backyard, especially for family cookouts and gatherings.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Keith B. and Courtney Ward of Crisfield; daughter-in-law, Kay Johnson and husband Riggin of Salisbury; grandsons, John David Perdue and wife Elizabeth of Princess Anne and William Kash Ward of Crisfield; two great-grandchildren, Addison and Jase; his close family friend, Donnie Chelton of Whaleyville; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, William Glenn Ward in 1988; and two sisters, Nancy Sue Ward and Margaret Ward Bloodsworth.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Bob Daniels will be Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 2 PM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home where a viewing will be one hour prior. Interment with military honors will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
