Lela Ruth Jones Evans, 99, of Crisfield and formerly of Smith Island, died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. She had been making her home in Annapolis with her granddaughter for the past three years.
Born on Ewell, Smith Island June 20, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Caleb W. and Charlotte Messick Jones. Her husband, Clarence G. "Bus" Evans, died April 12, 1993.
A homemaker, Lela moved to Crisfield in 1958 and boarded children from Smith Island in her home while they attended school in Crisfield. She was a member of the Evangelical Wesleyan Church in Crisfield. Most of all, Lela loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Bea Jo Lawson of Annapolis; three grandchildren, Clarence "Bussie" Smith and his wife Stephany of Solomons Island, Ruth Ann Landon and her husband Chris of Crisfield, and Lisa DeVito and her husband Mike of Annapolis; ten great-grandchildren, Olivia, Dominic, MaKenzie, Rhett, Brandi, Jaclyn, Stephen, Alexis, Trent and Chris, Jr.; and four great-great-grandchildren, Louis, Greg, Jadyn, and Gabe.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy L. Smith who died October 17, 1991; and her sisters and brother, Willie Middleton, Louise Brimer, and Caleb Jones, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 2 PM at Evangelical Wesleyan Church, 22 E. Chesapeake Avenue, Crisfield, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Rev.'s Terry Riggin, Bill Wilson and Henry Zollinhoffer will officiate. Interment will follow in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
