Karl Joseph Karnes, 60, of Tangier, VA and formerly of Newport News, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at his home.

Born in Tennessee on December 17, 1955, he was a son of the late William Karnes and Elizabeth Rogers Karnes.

He was a retired fire fighter with the Newport News Fire Department and served 4 years in the US Air Force.

He attended New Testament Church on Tangier and enjoyed playing sports, and was a professional painter.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Debra Ruth Landon Karnes of Tangier; three children, Ann Marie Parks and husband Richard of Tangier, Candi Schwartz and husband Jessie of Newport News, and Brandi Tuck and husband Asa of Yorktown, VA; a brother, Dennis Karnes of Newport News; a sister, Deborah Karnes of Georgia; and six grandchildren, Joseph McVey, Jr., R.J. Parks, Jasmine Schwartz, Ashley Schwartz, Seth Pack and Paige Tuck.

Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Doris Karnes.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
