John F. "John Reed" Evans, 86, of Rhodes Point, Smith Island, died Friday, December 20, 2013 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield.
Born on Ewell, Smith Island on December 12, 1927, he was a son of the late Ira F. and Alva L. Evans.
He was a retired waterman and following retirement built model skipjacks and workboats. He was a "Jack Of All Trades" regarding anything to do with the water and many people hired him to oil and scrape dredge boat masts and fix the netting on scrape bags. John Reed was a jokester who was known for his April Fool's Day pranks and his love for teasing children. He also loved Christmas and was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church on Rhodes Point.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ethel Marie Bradshaw Evans; two children, Helen Evans and husband Gillespie Evans, Jr. of Eden and Eugene Evans and his wife Rose of Marion; five grandchildren, Ernie Evans and wife Debbie of Pocomoke, Mary Louise Evans and husband Greg of Princess Anne, Christopher Evans and wife Danielle of Eden, David Evans and wife Billie Jean of Marion, and Christina Justice and her husband Brian of Greenbackville, VA; eleven great-grandchildren, Katie Horseman and husband Robbie, Brandon Evans and wife Sarah, Amanda Evans, Graceson Evans, Gregory Evans, Nicholas Evans, Noah Evans, Christian Evans, Damon Evans, David Evans, Jr. and wife Kira, and Kelly Townsend and husband John; five great-great-grandchildren, Bentley, Evan, John David, Mariah and Bryson; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Rabe Evans on December 13, 1990; and his siblings, Betty, Viola, Harry Reed and infant twin sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 23, 2013 at 2 PM at Calvary United Methodist Church on Rhodes Point where a viewing will be one hour prior. Rev. Rick Edmund will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Church Cemetery.
A special boat for funeral passengers, the Chelsea Lane, will depart Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield Monday at 12 Noon and return following the funeral services.
