John Woodland Haxter, 90, of Crisfield, died Saturday, March 15, 2014 at McCready Memorial Hospital.
Born in Crisfield on August 20, 1923, he was a son of the late Peter and Charlotte Anne Tawes Haxter. A graduate of Crisfield High School class of 1941, he was retired from the US Navy serving 20 years. Following his retirement from the US Navy, he worked 18 years as a quality control inspector for the US Postal Service in Norfolk.
He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Pocomoke City, and the Stanley Cochrane American Legion Post #16 in Crisfield.
A devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bertha Julia Vilius Haxter of Crisfield; five children, Brenda Phillips and David Haxter, both of Chesapeake, VA, Ronald Haxter of Virginia Beach, VA, Kevin Haxter of Machipongo, VA and Michael Haxter of Fenwick Island, DE; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1 PM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield where friends may call Friday evening from 6-8. Father William Porter will officiate. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
