Obituary

James John Corbett, 83, of Dames Quarter, died Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his home.

Born in Salisbury July 22, 1933 and raised in Wenona, he was a son of the late James Samuel Corbett and Ethel May Curtis O'Neal.

He was a US Air Force Vietnam veteran, serving 21 ½ years before his retirement in 1974. He truly loved his work, especially when he started flying as radar chief while stationed at Cape Cod.  After his retirement, he obtained his B.S. Degree in elementary education from Salisbury University. Before he even received a teaching position, he was hired as a spokesman for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).  He worked for the DAV for eight years until the position was terminated due to lack of funding by the government.

A member of Somerset United Methodist Church in Dames Quarter, he was a life member of the DAV, member of the American Legion Post #64 in Princess Anne, member of VFW Post #94 in Salisbury, member of Arlington Centennial-Glebe Masonic Lodge #81 A.F.&A.M., and was a 35 year member of the Deal Island – Chance Fire Department.

He will be sorely missed by all, especially by his wife, Shirley, and his three cousins, Eddie, Terry, and Gregory Webster, who did everything he needed for many years. He also leaves behind a brother, Samuel Patrick Corbett and his wife Rita of Rehobeth; a sister, Ramona Austin and her husband Joe of Mardela; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services officiated by the Reverends Jamie DeVaughn and JoAnne Hartman will be Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 2 PM at Somerset U. M. Church in Dames Quarter where viewings will be Wednesday evening from 7-9 and Thursday one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery in Wenona.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Somerset U. M. Church, c/o Debbie Jacobson, 11150 Messick Road, Dames Quarter, MD 21821.
