Obituary

IRENE P. TYLER, 91, of Crisfield, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

A daughter of the late Ewell H. and Lula Young Parks, she was born June 25, 1918, the last baby born on Holland's Island. Shortly after, when Holland's Island was evacuated due to erosion, her family moved to Cambridge where she was raised. At the age of 12, she and her family moved to Crisfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Harrison Tyler, in 1999.

She was a Crisfield High School graduate of the Class of 1935, and a 1941 graduate of the Lynchburg School of Nursing in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was a Registered Nurse, working 38 years until her retirement in 1979. Her last 25 years of nursing, she was employed at McCready Hospital in Crisfield working with Drs. A. N. Barr and James A. Sterling.

She was a long-time member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Crisfield and was a volunteer for many years for the American Cancer Society's Reach for Recovery program.

She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Tyler Drewer and her husband, Donnie, of Delmar, Maryland; her son, Ben Tyler and his wife, Pat, of Oviedo, Florida; two granddaughters, Beth Drewer of Delmar, Maryland and Amanda Drewer Raschka and her husband, Matt, of Baltimore City; two grandsons, John Tyler of Baltimore and Michael Tyler of Seattle, Washington; her baby great-granddaughter born November 9, 2009, Drew Elizabeth Raschka; her sister, Mary Lou Rice of Crisfield; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 13, 2009 at 12 Noon at Asbury U. M. Church in Crisfield where a visitation will be held one hour prior. The Rev.'s Tom Blakelock and Sally Russum will officiate. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are requested to be sent to a charity of one's choice.
