Henry Austin Charnock, 92, formerly of Baltimore, Md. and Tangier, Va., died on Sunday, November 15, 2009, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born March 27, 1917 on Tangier Island, he was a son of the late Willie Cornelius Charnock and Ruth Ann Thomas Charnock. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Charnock; his infant daughter; and sisters, Catherine "Cassie" Charnock and Miriam Charnock of Tangier, Va.; and dear friend Nina Coons of Marion Station, Md.
He attended Tangier School and served with the United States Coast Guard during WWII. A waterman by trade, he also worked for many years at what is now Baltimore's Inner Harbor where he transported and sold produce.
A truly free spirit, Henry would often "up and go", hopping buses to Baltimore right up to just a few weeks prior to his death. He also enjoyed sitting at the Crisfield City Dock so he could watch the boats come in from over home. Henry loved his country and his flag.
Henry is survived by many friends whose lives he has touched during his journey, including Michelle Pruitt and Donelle Hall of Crisfield, Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Linda Blake of Hebron, Stephanie Gilbert and Sally Cornish of Somerset County Dept. of Social Services, and Carolyn Crockett Parker of Marion Station.
A graveside service with urn interment and military honors will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the American Legion Veterans Cemetery on Somerset Avenue in Crisfield, Maryland. Pastor Debra Pierce-Dunn will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 39 W. Main St. Crisfield, MD 21817.
Arrangements are in the care of Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield.
