Harlan was born in Chicago on November 9, 1932 to Robert and Mary Katherine Von Stein Keith. He was born into a very well known Hollywood family.

Harlan entered show business at age 5 in a play called "Life with Father", starring Lillian Gish and Louis Calhern. He was also a member of the cast of "The Little Rascals". After he left Warner Brothers, he started on a night club tour with his own Night Club show. His show business career ended in 1976 when he suffered a very severe stroke.
