GLADYS IRENE SONNENLEITER, 99, of Crisfield and formerly of Chance, Maryland and Baltimore, Maryland died Friday, February 1, 2008 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield just ten days shy of her 100th birthday.
Born in Chance on February 11, 1908, she was a daughter of the late John N. and Margaret Louise "Maggie" Jones. Her first husband, Harry W. Loane, Jr. died in 1951, and her second husband, Percy Henry Sonnenleiter, died in 1977.
She was an operator/supervisor for the former C & P Telephone Company for 35 years.
An avid Baltimore Orioles fan, Mrs. Sonnenleiter was a member of Rock Creek United Methodist Church in Chance, Telephone Pioneers of America, Happy Timers in Salisbury, AARP Crisfield Chapter, Daughters of the Nile and Order of Eastern Star Chapter #8 in Baltimore.
She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Hooper of Baltimore; three grandchildren, Theresa Armstrong and husband Wayne, Susan Memomartina and husband Louis and Nancy Hooper, all of Baltimore; two great-grandchildren, Steve Armstrong of Baltimore and Amy Memomartina of New York; one sister, Mamie Gargan of Crisfield; a special niece, Kathy Sterling and husband Greg of Crisfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and her first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Lloyd Sonnenleiter; and her siblings, J. Denwood Jones, Margaret Davis, and John A. Jones.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 4, 2008 at 2 PM at Rock Creek U. M. Church in Chance. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6-8 PM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday. The Revs. Steve Willing and Lloyd Foard will officiate. Interment will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.
