GEORGE ELTON "JUNIE" MASSEY, JR., 87, of Crisfield, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009 at McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield after a short stay.
He was a native of Crisfield, born August 13, 1921 to the late Eva Byrd Massey and George Elton Massey.
Valedictorian of Crisfield High School Class of 1937, he served in the US Navy on a minesweeper off the West Coast during World War II. He returned home in 1946 with his wife, Margaret Daugherty Massey, and worked for the former W.W. Woolworth Co. and then for his father-in-law O.L. Daugherty before working for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He retired in 1980 after 30 years of service.
Mr. Massey was a 60-year member of the Chesapeake Lodge #147 AF&AM Masonic Lodge in Crisfield where he was Worshipful Master in 1957. He was a 60-year member of the Stanley Cochrane Post #16 American Legion, a lifetime member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Crisfield, member of the Crisfield Chapter of AARP, and a longtime member of the Crisfield Country Club. He enjoyed golf and bowling.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Massey; a daughter, Christine Allender and husband Dan of Bellvue, Colorado; a son, Michael S. Massey and wife Beth of Andover, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Craig Massey and Laura Massey of Andover; and a niece, Diane Brunk and husband Peter of Portsmouth, Virginia.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Gerald.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Bob Daniels will be held Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 11 AM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield where friends may call Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place during the viewing at 7 PM. Interment will be in Sunnyridge Memorial Park in Crisfield.
A special thanks goes out to all the family and friends who have shown such caring and concern. Brother-in-law Wayne Daugherty and Margaret's cousin Margaret Strain have given countless hours of time and caring helping both George and his children through this difficult time.
