Obituary

Eugene E. "Gene" Marshall, Sr. of Smith Island died Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield at age 76.

Born in 1938, he was the son of the late Elizabeth and Watson "Shug" Marshall, also of Smith Island.

After graduating from Crisfield High School in 1955, Eugene went on to enjoy a long career in the oyster industry. He began his profession as a young man working aboard the skipjack Caleb W. Jones and then as a seafood dealer in Washington, DC. He was a highly skilled and respected mariner, and best known as the long-time Captain of the oyster buy boat, J.C. Drewer. For many years he had the pleasure of working alongside his father and son. Eugene was a widely admired and well-known figure throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

He was a life-long member of Ewell United Methodist Church, and welcomed the opportunity to serve his community as a volunteer in the Ewell Fire Department. In addition, he was a member of the Chesapeake Masonic Lodge #147 AF & AM.

Eugene enjoyed fishing, loved history, and remained an avid reader. All who knew him enjoyed his humor and natural talent for telling stories about life on the Chesapeake.

He is survived by Christine V. Marshall, his wife of 50 years; a son, Calvin Watson Marshall, and adopted son and grandson, J. Watson Marshall, all of Smith Island. He also leaves behind a sister, Maxine Evans and her husband Marvin "Bunk" Evans; and a brother, Edward V. Marshall and his wife Sharon. His nieces and great-niece and great-nephews include, Natalie Blizzard, Ruth Evans, Evie Morvillo, Jamie Blizzard and Jason Blizzard; sister-in-law, Sherri Marsh Johns and husband Gary, and brother-in-law, Ricky Marsh.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest son, Eugene E. Marshall, Jr.

Selfless in death as in life, he has donated his body to medical science.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Ewell United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Edmund will officiate. The Island Belle and the Capt. Jason will be leaving the city dock at 12:30 PM.
