Obituary

ERNEST LINWOOD "SLIM" COLLINS, 67, of Crisfield, died in his sleep Sunday, April 6, 2008 at his home. He had been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

Born in Crisfield in 1941, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Muskey Collins of Crisfield.

Known in high school as "Slim", Ernie joined the US Navy at the age of 17 serving a four-year tour. He then married a local girl, Helen Bell, of Marion, and moved to Wilmington, Massachusetts to work for the AVCO Corp. He and his family lived in Massachusetts and New Hampshire before moving back to Maryland where he worked at Wallops Island, Virginia for several years. During those years, he and his family lived in Crisfield, then in Salisbury. Later, he went to work for the Department of the Army in Washington, DC, and after five years went to work for the CIA as a lithographer where he retired after 30 years. He resided in Suitland, Maryland, Glen Burnie, Maryland, Cape St. Claire, Maryland, and for one year, Arizona.

He held memberships with Elks, Moose, American Legion and VFW.

He and Helen divorced in 1993, but remained close friends. His last years were spent in Crisfield when his late mother became ill. He was a friend to all who knew him.

He is survived by two sons, Steven Collins of Fayetteville, Georgia and Ernest Collins, II of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; a daughter, Teresa Hickman of Glen Burnie, Maryland; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Louann Metheny and husband Russell of Loves Park, Illinois and Brenda Landon and husband Millard of Crisfield; five nieces and nephews; and several aunts and cousins in the Collins and DeHaven families.

Cremation followed his death; no services are planned at this time.
