Elwood Thomas "Woody" Long, 92, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at Washington State Veteran's Home in Tacoma.
Born February 20, 1922, in his grandfather's home in Crisfield, he was a son of the late Elwood Stanley Long and Agnus Lillian Nelson Long.
His family moved to Philadelphia at age 6 and he graduated from Olney High School in 1939. He played music all through school and had his own big band in later years, "Woody Long's Musical Monarch's", playing the saxophone. Music was the love of his life!
He married Irene Sipes in 1942 and had 3 children, Woody, Dallas and Terry. He served in the US Coast Guard from 1942 -1945 and held the rank of Seaman First Class. He later drove a city bus in Philadelphia.
Following a divorce from Irene, he married Elaine Ruman in 1959. He moved with her and her 3 children, Jon, Cindy and Gordie, to Tacoma, WA. They had a son
of their own, Kim, who passed away at age 14.
While in Washington, Woody worked as a warehouseman for Nalley's Fine Foods for 30 years and ran two Drive-in theatres in Tacoma. He retired from Nalley's at age 75 and then worked for Circuit City for 5 years. Finally he retired for good at age 80 and moved to Dallas to be with his step-daughter, Cindy. He moved back to Salisbury for 2 years and then back to Dallas into a retirement home and finally back to Tacoma where he lived in a Washington State Veteran's Home until he passed away.
He is survived by his younger brother Wayne; biological children, Woody, Dallas and Terry; step-children, Jon, Cindy and Gordie; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 2 PM at Sunnyridge Memorial Park with Father William Porter officiating.
