ELMER LOWERY EVANS, 90, of Ewell, Smith Island, died Thursday, January 24, 2008 at his home.
Born on Tilghman Island on January 10, 1918, he was a son of the late Asbury and Addie Tyler Evans.
He was a life-long waterman, who loved anything to do with being on the water. He enjoyed carving; and gardening was his passion.
A United States Navy veteran of World War II, he was a faithful member of Ewell United Methodist Church on Smith Island where he was treasurer for many years. He was a devoted member of the Ewell Volunteer Fire Department where he was a life member and was the first chief. In addition, he founded the former Full Gospel Fellowship Businessmen International Organization and he also helped start the former Lions Club on the Island.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Lillian Estelle Harrison Evans of Ewell; a daughter, Sharon Bruce and husband Barry of Ewell; a sister, Addie Wood Fairbanks of Tilghman Island; six grandchildren, Anita Kitching and husband Mark of Ewell, Valerie Nelson and husband Mark of Charlotte, NC, Lance Dize and wife Kristy of Eden, Norwood Evans and wife Hope of Tangier, VA, Jenny Evans of US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and LeeAnna Evans of Fairmount; seven great-grandchildren, Ashli and Gabrielle Nelson, Rebekah and Joseph David Kitching, Hailey and Chloe Dize, and Cameron Evans; a daughter-in-law, Connie Evans of Fairmount; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Edwin Ellison Evans in 1977 and Lowery Evans in 1998; three brothers, Edwin, Chester and Ruthwin Evans; and one sister, Margaret Hilton.
A Firemen's Funeral will be held Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 2 PM at Ewell United Methodist Church on Smith Island. The Rev. Rick Edmund will officiate. Friends may call Saturday morning from 10-11 AM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield and 7-9 PM at the church on Ewell. Interment will be in the Ewell Church Cemetery.
