EDWARD EUGENE "GENE" SOMERS, 85, of Ewell, Smith Island, died Friday, December 14, 2007, at McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield. He had been a resident of Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield for the past eight years.
Born on Ewell, Smith Island June 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Daniel T. and Annie Evans Somers. His wife, Lorraine Mae Evans Somers died February 27, 1993.
A United States Navy veteran, he was stationed on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina where he served on a supply boat during World War II. He was a waterman, and was the cook aboard the dredge boat "Minnie V." for more than 20 years.
He was a member of Ewell United Methodist Church on Smith Island, member of the Stanley Cochrane Post #16 American Legion in Crisfield for more than 50 years, former member of the Tangier Sound Watermen's Association, member of the former Lions Club on Smith Island, and was honorary member of the Ewell Volunteer Fire Department. He was a prankster who loved to pull jokes on people; he loved to feed stray dogs, and enjoyed reading "The Grit" and American Legion Magazine.
He is survived by a son, Eddie Somers and wife Shelley of Crisfield; two daughters, Debby S. Nelson of Crisfield and Beverly B. Spurry and husband Chris of St. Michaels; eight grandchildren, Ellie Spurry, Beth Spurry, Megan Nittle and husband Chris, Tracey Erickson and husband Jonathan, Billy Nelson and wife Cristiana, Stacey Bennett and husband Darrell, Justin Somers and Alex Somers; eleven great-grandchildren; a special niece, Dixie Larrimore of Easton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters; Nina Ruth Smith, Lucille Middleton, and Eloise Crockett Smith.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 2 PM at Ewell U. M. Church on Smith Island. The Rev. Rick Edmund will officiate. Friends may call Tuesday from 10-11 AM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield and at the church from 7-9 PM. Interment will be in Ewell Church Cemetery.
There will be a special boat "The Chelsea Lane" leaving the Somers Cove Marina on Wednesday, December 19th at 12 noon and will be returning after the funeral.
