Obituary
Edna Ruth Somers, 93, of Ewell, Smith Island, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield.
Born on Ewell, Smith Island on September 4, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Oliver Lester and Agnes Evans Tyler. Her husband, William Ellsworth "Messer" Somers, preceded her in death on December 14, 1989.
She was a graduate of Crisfield High School and attended Salisbury State Teachers College. She was a homemaker, and also was a substitute teacher on Smith Island.
A faithful member of Ewell United Methodist Church, she was active in the UMW and was the pianist for a number of years. Her greatest joy was going to church and reading her Bible daily. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and enjoyed going to the Smith Island MAC Center. She loved taking care of her home, and did beautiful crochet work.
A devoted and loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by two daughters, Mary Ruth Evans and husband Elmer "Junior" of Ewell and Rose Evans and husband Eugene of Marion Station; four grandchildren, Sherry Maloney and husband Lex of Delmar, MD, Buddy Evans and wife Laura of Ewell, David Evans and wife Billie Jean of Marion Station, and Christina Justice and husband Brian of Greenbackville, VA; three great-grandchildren, David Evans, Jr. and wife Kira of Crisfield, Caleb Evans of Ewell, and Kelly Townsend and husband John of Crisfield; and five great-great grandchildren, John David, Mariah, Bryson, Bentley, and Evan.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Louise Tyler.
Funeral services officiated by Rev. Rick Edmund will be held Friday, July 19, 2013 at 2 PM at Ewell U. M. Church. Friends may call Thursday from 10-11 AM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield and from 7-9 PM at the Church on Smith Island. Interment will be in the Ewell Church Cemetery.
A special boat for funeral passengers, "Chelsea Lane", will depart Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield at 12:30 PM and will return after the funeral, departing Smith Island at 4 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Ewell U. M. Church or Ewell Volunteer Fire Department.
