Obituary

Doris Mae Hancock (Holland) went to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 8, 2026. After enjoying a blessed Christmas full of good food and fun card games with her whole family, Doris was ready to go to her heavenly home. After a long and well-fought battle with cancer, her prayers were answered as God granted her a quick and peaceful transition from her home in Stockton, Maryland, to her eternal home in heaven.

Doris was born on December 20, 1946, to Paul and Josephine Holland, Sr. of Wenona, Maryland. Doris was the loving wife of David W. Hancock III for 60 blessed years. She was a caring and devoted mother to David IV (Jill), Kelley (Richard Johnson), Kristen (Michael Naughton), and Katie, and a loving and adored grandmother to Rachel, Katherine, Caleb, Jocelyn, Liam, Owen, and Evan. She was a faithful believer in Christ from a young age and a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, now Wesley Community Church.

Proverbs 31:10–12
The Woman Who Fears the Lord
"An excellent wife who can find?  [God gave her husband David one.]
She is far more precious than jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life."

Doris loved sports and adventures throughout her life. She played basketball, softball and field hockey in high school and went on to enjoy many years of recreational softball, volleyball, water aerobics, and more recently, pickleball. She loved playing pickleball with all her local pickleball friends, they brought her much happiness. Her love for pickleball has been passed on to all her children and grandchildren who also enjoy the fun sport. Her passion for athletics even led her to earn a black belt in karate and participate in the senior olympics for softball. She traveled to 19 different countries, hanging out with popes, queens and wombats. Doris was also gifted in many crafts, including painting, sewing, stained glass, and card making, but her true creative passion was scrapbooking. She greatly treasured the friendships she made through scrapbooking and the many retreats she attended. Doris' scrapbooks are beautiful works of art that her children and grandchildren will cherish.

Doris brought love, laughter and fun to all wherever she went. She loved sitting around her dining room table playing cards with her family into the wee hours of the night. She loved to work in the kitchen alongside her family and especially her grandchildren. Her culinary skills were divine and will be handed down for generations to come. Her grandchildren will remember her in the kitchen frequently saying "every job needs a good supervisor," as she learned from Poppop Hancock.

Throughout her life, Doris held various jobs, but her greatest calling was being a devoted and wonderful homemaker to her family. Her first career in cosmetology lasted 60 years as she was still cutting her grandchildren's hair in 2025! She also faithfully volunteered in Sunday school, Chi-Rho youth ministry, and the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), where she served for 27 years and made sure everyone knew Rule #1. Doris also volunteered at the Snow Hill schools as well as coached her children's Odyssey of the Mind teams for many years along with David.

Doris is survived by her husband, children and grandchildren; her brothers, Paul Holland, Jr. of Salisbury and Arby Holland of Wenona; and her sisters, Ruth Tyler of Princess Anne and Jan Elrod of Salisbury as well as her dearly loved extended Hancock family with 6 bonus sisters. She also was loved by 18 nieces and nephews on the Holland side of the family and 16 on the Hancock side (plus 54 grand nieces and nephews). She has a special place in her heart for all of them.

Doris is now at peace with her Savior, free from pain and has perfect eyesight. Her parents and her brother, Gary "Bones" Holland, and her beloved cousin Sharon Mihavetz (Evans) were waiting in heaven to welcome her. Her prayer is that her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, and all her friends would know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and to know that she is waiting in heaven to greet them. Doris will live on in her families and friends hearts by all the wonderful things she taught them and showed them through her life. She will be deeply missed.

Doris's celebration of life will be held at Wesley Community Church on Monday, January 19, at 12:00 pm. officiated by Rev. Jay Hurley and Pastors Mike and Tina Butler. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am. Burial and a brief graveside service will follow across the street at Stockton Memorial Gardens, with a reception at the Stockton Volunteer Fire Company afterward.
