David "Barry" Bruce, 84, of Ewell, MD passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born on April 6, 1941 in Fredericksburg, VA and raised on Tylerton, Smith Island, he was a son of the late Carson Henderson "Junior" Bruce and Stella Marsh Bruce.
Barry was a waterman and was very active in his community. He was a member of the Tangier Sound Waterman's Association, Camp Meeting Committee, was Treasurer for Hill Waterworks, and he offered sightseeing and boating Eco Tours for tourists to see the beautiful sights of Smith Island. He was inducted into the Waterman's Hall of Fame in 2016 and he was a faithful member of Ewell United Church.
He loved to read the Bible and was very proud of his heritage. He loved to educate people about the place he called home, Smith Island. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching country westerns on TV, and he loved Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sharon Rose Evans Bruce of Ewell; daughters, Anita Kitching and husband Mark of Ewell and Valerie Nelson and husband Mark of High Point, NC; grandchildren, Ashli Huntsman and husband Jeff of Thomasville, NC, Gabrielle Trull and husband James of Greensboro, NC, and Rebekah Kitching and partner Sarah Lazar of Candy Kitchen, New Mexico; great-grandchildren, Lucie Huntsman, Everhett Huntsman, Elias Trull, and Amelia Trull; brother, Kenneth Bruce and wife Susan of Salisbury; nieces and nephews, Kenneth Bruce, Jr. and wife Georgia of Crisfield, Debbie Bruce of Salisbury, Patricia Truse of Salisbury, Norwood Evans and wife Hope of Tangier, Lance Dize and wife Kristy of Eden, Jenny Warren and husband Brian of Solomons Island, and Carol Leeanna Likourgos and husband Josh of Snow Hill; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Joseph David Kitching.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Ewell United Church at 2 PM where a visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Orlando Short will officiate. Urn interment will be in Ewell United Church Cemetery.
A boat for funeral passengers, Chelsea Lane, will depart Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield at 12 PM and return following the memorial services.
