Daniel Carlton Crockett, 46, of Tangier Island, VA, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Born in Deal Island, MD, he was the son of the late Rev. Ralph Dewey Crockett and Jean Tappan Crockett. He moved to Tangier Island with his parents at the age of 5.
He was a graduate of Tangier High School Class of 1997 and studied Criminal Justice for a time at Wor-Wic Community College. He also had numerous certifications including HVAC, EMT, Personal Training and even Paranormal Investigation. Most recently he was a janitor for Tangier Combined School and several Air B&B properties on Tangier.
Daniel or “Hoss” as he was known to many, enjoyed many activities including weight-lifting and exercise, watching superhero movies, going to the shooting range, playing cornhole and visiting his friends. And who can forget his love of candy and junk food. He had a vast knowledge of nutritional and weight-lifting supplements, even working as manager of a GNC store for 5 years.
Daniel was a faithful caretaker of his mother and father and helped to provide outstanding medical care to both.
Daniel enjoyed working as janitor for Tangier Combined School where he was loved by all the kids, affectionately calling him Mr. Daniel.
Above all Daniel loved Jesus and served him faithfully. His life’s ambition was to be close to his Lord and Savior and to one day walk beside him in Heaven. He enjoyed spending time “in the presence” of the Lord, talking about the Bible, listening to praise and worship music, playing guitar, writing songs, and being out in creation admiring all the wonders of his God, especially sitting by a fire and looking at the stars.
Daniel passed away at his home after a yearlong battle with colon cancer surrounded by family and friends. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by a sister, Nicole Hoffman and family; aunts and uncle, Sue Williams, Dennis Crockett and Jeanette Crockett; cousins, Edward Crockett, Claudine Eskridge, Mark Crockett, Tina Coughlin, Tonya Olding, Chad Williams, Damian Williams, and their families; and many close friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Merrill and Ruth Crockett, and Pearl and Hiram Tappan; uncles, Allen Ray Crockett and Lester Williams; and an aunt, Sue Etta Crockett.
A memorial service will be held at Swain Memorial Church on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 2:00 with a time of visitation and sharing at 1:30. Rev. Charles “Chuck” Parks will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Swain Memorial Church.
