Obituary

Curtis Peter Johns, 57, of Marion Station, Md. went to be with the Lord at his home on Friday, August 11, 2017 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born in Crisfield on January 5, 1960, he was the eldest son of the late Basil Peter Johns and Ida Mae Garrison Johns.

Curtis began charter fishing the Chesapeake Bay, Tangier and Pocomoke Sounds at the age of 17 with his maternal grandfather, Raymond Garrison, whom he idolized. He later graduated from Crisfield High School in 1978, and went on to earn an associate's degree in marine biology estuarine science from Charles County Community College in 1980.

After college, Curtis returned to his love for working the water spending time as a commercial fisherman along the Bay oystering, crab dredging, and clamming until he returned full-time to charter fishing in the early 1990s. Although Curtis made his living on his boat, fishing and spending time with his family was his passion. Curtis was also a co-owner of Marion Pharmacy along with his brother Garrison—a business that was started in 1957 by their pharmacist father, Basil "Doc" Johns.

Curtis was a founding member and two time past president of the Somerset County Charter Boat Association. He was a longtime member and area director of the Maryland Charter Boat Association and was serving as the Vice President of area 3 at the time of his death. He also served on the board of the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative, where he was instrumental in establishing the Tangier Sound artificial reef. Curtis was a longstanding and relentless supporter of the above organizations doing everything he could to support his fellow charter captains in the lower Bay.

He is survived by his wife, Tracey F. Johns; sons Raymond B. Johns and wife Liz, Curtis R. Johns and wife Maddie, all of Marion, Md.; two step-children, Andrew W. Walter, and Riley C. Walter, both of Easton, Md.; a brother, Garrison B. Johns and wife Sherri of Severn, Md.; grandchildren Curtis R. Johns, Jr., Camden L. Johns, and Cheyenne G. Johns, all of Marion, Md.; aunts Aspasia Johns and Helen Johns of Baltimore, Md.; numerous friends and other family, as well as his fishing mate and canine friend, Pal.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield, Md. Services will be Wednesday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m., also at the funeral home, with interment immediately following at Sunnyridge Memorial Park in Crisfield. Pastors Steve Willing and Jerry Hughes will be officiating.

Curtis was touched by all those who meant so much to him throughout his life's journey, and especially for those that prayed for his healing.
