Obituary

Elsworth Zadok Long CLE ELUM, Wash. - Cornelius Elsworth Zadok Long, born Oct. 1, 1920, to Upshur and Eurthea Long in Kingston, Md., passed away Oct. 2, 2011, at his home in Cle Elum, Wash. Cornelius joined the U.S. Army March 15, 1944 serving in the transportation corps, acquiring rank of 1st Lt. He was a graduate of the Marine Officer Cadet School conducted by the U.S. Maritime Service for the war department. Cornelius was given a commission by President Roosevelt as a 2nd Lt and became an instructor at a temporary navigation school, later becoming a navigator himself in Alaskan waters before he obtained his masters license. He was later transferred to the U.S. Army Seattle Port of Embarkation where the Army harbor craft troops were trained and was sent overseas under General MacArthur. After the 2nd World War ended, he was employed by the war department as Staff Engineer in decommissioning war ships on the Columbia River and later became Pilot/Captain of sea going Army tug boats, operating as pilot for two separate ports of entry for the state of Alaska. He had a crew of 15 and was proud to say he never lost a ship. After returning from the Army and the sea, he became a Marine insurance broker, insuring cargo especially from China and Japan, fishing fleets out of Seattle, canneries in Alaska, major dams and bridges, and the ferry fleet in the state of Washington. On April 17, 1951, Cornelius married Louise Griffith in Seattle, Wash. They maintained a second home in Roslyn, Wash., from 1965 until 1981 at which time they retired to their home in Roslyn. They moved to Cle Elum, Wash., in 2003. Cornelius is survived by his wife, Louise of Cle Elum; daughter, Ann Corneilia Long of Bothell; sister, Dorothy Marshall of Kingston, Md.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Philip Long; sister, Viola Ross; and brother-in-law, Percy Marshall. Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Nov. 15, 2011, at Sunny Ridge Cemetery. Bradshaw's Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
