Charles Joseph Lehrer, Jr., 81, of Crisfield and formerly of Baltimore, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at his home. He had been living in Crisfield for twenty years.
Affectionately known as "Mr. Luigi", he was born in Baltimore on September 5, 1940, and was the son of the late Charles Joseph Lehrer, Sr. and Florence Jenkins Lehrer.
He was a graduate of Parkville High School in Baltimore and went on to obtain an Engineering Degree and Merchant Mariner Captains License. He retired from the US Army as Bird Colonel after 28 years of service. He was a helicopter pilot flying from gunships while serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While serving his country, he received two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, Silver Star, Medal of Valor and the Broken Wing Award to name a few and he was also a POW in Czechoslovakia.
He was a master electrician and was owner of his business C.J. Lehrer & Sons in Baltimore. He was also the owner of the former Luigi's Italian Restaurant in Crisfield.
Active in his community, he was a life member of the former VFW Post #8274, member of the Accohannock Indian Tribe, and member of Lynden Heights Methodist Church. In his spare time he loved restoring antique cars and was currently working on his 1915 Maxwell.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Alice Bernadette "Marty" Meise Lehrer of Crisfield; children, Charles Joseph Lehrer, III/Billie of Port Deposit, MD, Michael Douglas Lehrer/Melissa of York, PA, Todd Douglas Lehrer of Roanoke, VA, and Mary Elizabeth Gullivan and Terrie Griffin, both of Florida; grandchildren, Joseph Michael Lehrer, Christopher James Lehrer, Heather Lehrer, John Thomas Ciszek, Jr., Megan Gullivan, Christina Gullivan, Brandon Bates, Erica Bates, and Erin Morris; great-grandchildren, Eric, Paisley, Coral Rose, and Kaylee; sisters, Noraleen Lehrer, Alice Lehrer, and Helen Lehrer; former daughter-in-law, Kim Lehrer; and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his children, Richard Charles Lehrer, Terry Lynn Lehrer, and John Thomas Ciszek; and brothers and sister, John William Lehrer, Gerald Lehrer, and Betty Lehrer.
