Billy Gene Smith, 70, of Ewell, Smith Island, died Saturday, February 18, 2023 at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional.

He was born March 22, 1952 in Crisfield and raised on Smith Island. He was the son of the late Edwin and Nina Ruth Somers Smith.

A life-long waterman, he had a great love of the water and truly loved his work.  He was also an animal lover.  He was a member of Ewell United Methodist Church and Ewell Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Vanessa Lee Evans Smith of Ewell; two sons, Billy Matthew "Matt" Smith and wife Amy of Westover and Steven Smith of Salisbury; grandchildren, Ciara Smith, Brianna Smith, Hannah Sherrill, Kyle Mills and Andrew Mills; great-grandson, Odin Sherrill; sister, Dixie Larrimore and husband Jack of Easton; brother, Edwin "Smitt" Smith, III and wife Cindy of Lusby; and many special nieces and nephews.

A Fireman's Funeral officiated by Pastor Jim Evans will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2 PM at the Smith Island Rec. Center. Viewings will be Friday morning from 10-11 at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield and Friday evening from 7-9 PM at the Smith Island Rec. Center.

A special boat for funeral passengers, Chelsea Lane, will depart from the Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield at 12PM and return following the funeral services.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Ewell Volunteer Fire Dept., Ewell, MD 21824.
