Obituary

Betty Webb Tyler, 93, of Crisfield, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 17, 2021, with the support of her daughter and son, friends, and caregivers.

Betty was born in Crisfield on December 30, 1927, the daughter of the late J. Vernon Webb and Alice Wilson Webb. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, George Henry Tyler in 2004.

Betty was a graduate of Crisfield High School, one of the last surviving members of the Class of 1944. She was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, and taught Sunday school for more than 20. She was a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout leader and participated in the PTA. Betty and Henry were both active in the Crisfield Country Club, organizing golf and social events. Betty was a board member of the Tawes Historical Museum and enjoyed volunteering as a docent, welcoming visitors to Crisfield and leading them on guided tours around town. Betty was a member of both the American Legion Auxiliary Post 16 and the 29th Division Association Auxiliary Post 88.

Betty retired from the Somerset County Board of Education after many years as the County Food Services Coordinator. In her retirement, Betty enjoyed water aerobics, bridge, traveling and knitting. A highlight was socializing with her special friends, the "Golden Girls" and participating in activities with the Maryland Retired School Personnel Association. She enjoyed boating on the Bay and annual family visits to the beach. She loved animals, especially cats, but was known to give treats to all the neighborhood dogs that came by her house. Betty epitomized the saying "make new friends but keep the old" as she nurtured long standing friendships and continued making new friends. Her move to Water's Edge introduced her to new friends and she enjoyed visiting with a glass of chardonnay on her porch overlooking the Small Boat Harbor.

Most important to Betty was her family. She especially adored her five grandsons and attended their sporting events, band concerts, and graduations. She looked forward to vacations together and never turned down an opportunity to spend time with family. She watched proudly as her grandsons grew into young men and continued to enjoy their visits to Crisfield.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was predeceased by her brother, J.V. Webb, her sister, Nancy Crockett, and grandson, Alexander Tyler.

Betty is survived by her son, George V. Tyler (Doris), Herndon, Virginia and her daughter, Sue Ellen Cooper, Ellicott City. She is also survived by her grandsons, Will Tyler, Greg Tyler, Kyle Cooper and Nick Cooper and several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service is being planned.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested for Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733; or Asbury Cemetery Fund, 3380 Lawsonia Road, Crisfield, MD 21817.
