Betty Matthews Newsome, 83, of Carver, Massachusetts and formerly of Crisfield, died Monday, January 14, 2013 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Born in Crisfield on May 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Paul Matthews and the late Louise Florence Collins and the step-daughter of the late Paul Collins. Her husband, Robert Loren Newsome, died October 4, 2009.

A graduate of Crisfield High School, she was a telephone operator at McCready Hospital for 15 years. Prior, she was an operator at the former C & P Telephone Company for 12 years.

She was a member of the Mariners United Methodist Church in Crisfield, and was a former member of the Crisfield Lioness Club.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelba Jean Newsome Spencer of Carver; two brothers, Donald Matthews and wife Rachel, and Frank Collins, Jr. and wife Bonnie of Crisfield; an aunt, Essie Landon of Crisfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

No services are planned at this time.
