Obituary

Barbara Jo "Jody" Moore Cannon, 73, of Tangier Island, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 1, 2022 from Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News, VA surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Crisfield on October 12, 1948 and raised on Tangier Island, she was a daughter of Edna Sears of Tangier and the late Alonza James Moore, Jr.

She spent 40+ years working for Tangier Combined School doing what she knew best, feeding all the children of the Island and she loved them dearly.

Mrs. Cannon was a member of the New Testament Church on Tangier for more than 10 years.  Prior, she was a member of Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Tangier for more than 60 years and was active in the Women's Society.  She was a talented crafter and truly enjoyed her crocheting ministry.  She crocheted baby blankets for every baby on Tangier as well as lap blankets for nursing home residents.  Mrs. Cannon also had a ministry of hospitality.  Her door was always open and welcomed anyone for dinner and/or an overnight stay.  She was always cooking and baking and lovingly brought food to people who were sick, shut in, or experiencing a death in the family.  Most of all she loved serving the Lord and spending precious time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, George "Cook" Cannon, Jr.; mother, Edna Sears; children, Janet Cannon Ford and husband Allen and George "Cookie" Cannon, III and wife Donna Rae; grandchildren, Adrienne Stanley and husband Adam, Christopher Ford and wife Kayla, and Donnie Cannon; twin great-granddaughters, Audrie and Averie Stanley; brothers, Lonnie Moore and wife Carol, and Tracy Moore and wife Trenna; brothers-in-law, Dana Dise and wife Sharon and Chuck Parks; sister-in-law, Henny Dise; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her father, AJ Moore, she was preceded in death by her grandparents; sisters-in-law, JoAnne Cooper and Karen Parks; brother-in-law, Larry Dise; and a great-grandchild in Heaven that she got to meet before us.

A viewing will be Wednesday, July 6, 2022 from 7-9 PM at the New Testament Church on Tangier.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 12 PM at the New Testament Church on Tangier where a closed casket visitation will be from 11-12.  Interment will follow at approximately 4 PM at Sunnyridge Memorial Park in Crisfield.

There will be special boat charters provided by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to transport funeral passengers from Crisfield and Smith Island to Tangier on Thursday and will return following the funeral services.  Two boats will depart Thursday from Somers Cove Marina "A Pier" at 10 AM and a separate boat will depart Smith Island at 10AM.
