Arthur Wellington "Billy Jim" Tawes, Jr., 90, of Crisfield, died Monday, December 29, 2014 at McCready Memorial Hospital.
Born in Crisfield July 9, 1924, he was a son of the late Arthur Wellington Tawes, Sr. and Minnie Estelle Daugherty Tawes. His wife of 59 years, Nancy Nuttle Tawes, preceded him in death July 12, 2012.
A graduate of Crisfield High School class of 1941, he received his degree in economics from the University Of Pennsylvania Wharton School Of Business and was a member of Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity. He was comptroller at the former Carvel Hall Cutlery for more than 25 years retiring in 1988.
A faithful member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, he served on the Administrative Board, Finance Chairman, Past President of the United Methodist Men, Sunday School Teacher, and played saxophone in the church orchestra for many years. He was Past Master of the Chesapeake Lodge #147 AF&AM, Past President of the Somerset-Worcester Past Master's Association, Past President of the former Crisfield Rotary Club, Past President of the McCready Foundation Board of Directors, treasurer and honorary life member of the Crisfield Country Club, member of the Stanley Cochrane Post #16 American Legion, and played in the former Crisfield Community Band for many years. He was also an Eagle Scout, Past Scout Master and received the prestigious award of Silver Beaver.
He enjoyed music and was a talented musician, playing saxophone, piano, harmonica, and clarinet. He also enjoyed woodworking, reading and was a history buff. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, and doting on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by three children, Arthur Harold "Artie" Tawes of Crisfield, Susan Tawes Corbin and husband Steven of Crisfield, and Jane Tawes King and husband Johnny of Dames Quarter; five grandchildren, Ashley Lynn King Kreyer and husband Seaton of Myrtle Beach, SC, Andrew John "Andy" King of Chicago, Victoria Grace Corbin Gray and husband Walter of Bloxom, VA, Amy Elizabeth Corbin of Crisfield, and Quincy Scott Corbin of Crisfield; three great-grandchildren, Caroline Elise Kreyer, Mason Elliott Gray, and Logan Andrew Stephenson; a niece, Ann Todd Whitcomb and husband Bob; two nephews, Casey Ira Todd and wife Kim, and Michael Wellington Todd and wife Paula, and their families; and many special friends and caregivers.
Along with his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Grace Tawes Todd and her husband Ira Thompson "I. T." Todd, Jr., and Mary Kathryn Tawes.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Paul Holland will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 2 PM at Immanuel United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Asbury Cemetery. A viewing will be held Friday evening at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home from 6-8 with a Masonic Memorial Service to begin at 7.
