Obituary

ANNA ELIZABETH SNYDER, 88, of Fruitland since 2001 and formerly of Crisfield, died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Lublin, Poland on April 22, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Maria Kolanika. Her husband, Stanley J. Snyder, died March 8, 1988.

Mrs. Snyder's entire family, including her first husband and her twin son and daughter, were killed in a bombing in the German Blitzkrieg of Poland during World War II. She was captured by the Germans in Poland and taken as a slave to Germany. Her life was spared due to her speaking seven different languages, and she was used as an interpreter for the Germans. After escaping her capture, she helped American soldiers by delivering supplies through the underground in Germany. After the war, she worked for the CIA in Germany and was recognized for her services by General Douglas MacArthur and Dwight D. Eisenhower and was granted US citizenship. Her proudest moment was coming to the US by ship and seeing the Statue of Liberty and later being able to vote for President Eisenhower after being recognized by him. She had been a US citizen for over 50 years.

She attended St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Westover when she was able, and she had been a resident of Manokin Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past year.

She is survived by many special friends.

A graveside funeral service and interment will be held Saturday, December 15, 2007 at 1 PM at Sunnyridge Memorial Park in Crisfield. Father William Porter will officiate the service.
