Obituary

ANDREW L. CROCKETT (SHAD) of Crisfield, Maryland died on July 1, 2009 at age 85 after a brief illness.

Born on Tangier Island, Virginia, he was the son of the late Andrew A. and Priscilla Wheatley Crockett. He was a graduate of Crisfield High School and the U.S. Army Transportation Marine Deck Officer's Academy.

As a young man he worked with his family on the buy boat "Nellie Crockett" and later was a Maryland State Trooper. Retiring early due to injury, he then worked for several local trucking companies, Eastern Freight Ways and Service Trucking Co. as manager and safety director. He ended his long career as Postmaster of the Crisfield Post Office in 1987.

Andrew served with the U.S. Army in WWII with the 115th regiment of the 29th Infantry Division. He landed on Omaha Beach with the Second Wave of soldiers D-Day, June 6, 1944 and fought in the hedgerows of Normandy, France, the Rhineland and Central Europe through the capture of Berlin. After six years of Active Duty and 34 years of Active Reserve, he retired from Military Service in 1983 with the rank of CWO 4.

In retirement, he was active in many local organizations. He was most fond of his participation in Maryland State Police Retired Troopers Assoc., The 29th Division Assoc., The American Legion, and the many friends he enjoyed in these organizations.

Among his many interests were golf, boating, gardening, his many friends, and family. His love for dancing was legendary. It has been said that he was the first one on the dance floor and the last one off.

He is survived by his son, Andrew Crockett, Jr. (Carolyn) of Westover, Maryland and his daughter, Susan Twilley (Robert) of Salisbury, Maryland. His two granddaughters, Andrea Golts and Lorna Crockett, also survive him. For 55 years, he was married to the late Nancy Webb Crockett, also of Crisfield, who preceded him in death on February 21, 2002. Of his six brothers and sisters, Lester Crockett, Crisfield, and Stanford Crockett, Silver Spring, Maryland survive him.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 2 PM at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 206 W. Main Street, Crisfield, Maryland where the family will receive visitor's one hour prior. Interment with full military honors will follow in Sunnyridge Memorial Park.
