Alverta Louise Townsend, 91, of Crisfield, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at McCready Memorial Hospital.
Born in Crisfield October 23, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Harrison Swift. Her husband, Wayne Sterling Townsend, died December 3, 1986.
She was a homemaker and also worked at Metompkin Bay Seafood for many years. She grew up in Mariners United Methodist Church, and in her later years attended Somerset Free Methodist Church with her daughter, Joyce. She loved to cook for her family and friends and enjoyed making them coffee. She loved people, she didn't know a stranger, and her door was always open to everyone. She was also very proud of being a part of the movie Jacob Have I Loved that was filmed in Crisfield. She was a very loving and devoted mother.
She is survived by her son, Wayne Townsend, Jr. and wife Pat of Crisfield; her daughter, Elizabeth Ann "Pixie" Townsend and fiancé Michael Pilchard of Crisfield; two brothers, Jack Swift of Crisfield and Carl "Bing" Swift of Marion; a sister, Julia Ward of Salisbury; five grandchildren, Michael Townsend and wife Sandy, Stephen Townsend and fiancé Chrissy Harrison, Jeremy Townsend and fiancé Kathy Comeaux, Joshua Townsend and girlfriend Sheri Grant, and Devin Marshall; five great-grandchildren, Zachary Townsend, Jacob Townsend, Alyssa Townsend, Jessie Buffom, and Isabella Buffom; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Fay Nelson on March 8, 2010; and her brothers and sisters, Charles Edward Swift, William Thomas Swift, Russell Webster Swift, David Lee Swift, Gene Sullivan Swift, Joseph Swift, Marie Swift, Maybelle Swift, twins Edith Rock and Georgia Ann Swift, Helen Clough, Ann Bozman, and twins Olive and Oliver Swift.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 10, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Marion Baptist Church where a viewing will be one hour prior. The Reverend Joseph Barnes will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.
