MARGUERITE C. PHILLIPS, 97, of Crisfield, died Monday, March 14, 2011 at the McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield.

Born in Crisfield on November 6, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Bertrum and Althea Bell Tawes Carey. Her husband, Gordy James Phillips, died May 21, 1984.

She was a homemaker and in her later years, worked in housekeeping at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crisfield where she was active in the WMU. She loved taking care of her home, cooking, gardening, and crocheting. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Janet Riggin and Linda Sterling and her husband Jim Boy, all of Crisfield; six grandchildren, Vonny Pilchard and her husband David of Pocomoke, James Phillips Riggin of Alexandria, VA, Jill Riggin Taylor and her husband Kevin of Fruitland, John Russell “Rusty” Riggin of Crisfield, Jamie Sterling and his wife Casey of Crisfield and Kristy Sterling Cullen and her husband Brent of Crisfield; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and Donnie Chelton of Pittsville, Cathy Gunter of Marion, Carol Tyler of Crisfield and Billie Jean Evans of Marion, who she thought of as her grandchildren.

Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Edison Carey; her sister, Dorothy Thomas; and Peggy A. Bradshaw, who was raised as a daughter.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 2 PM at Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield where friends may call one hour prior. The Rev. Bob Daniels will officiate. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery in Crisfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be sent to Tawes Nursing Home, Activities Fund, 201 Hall Highway, Crisfield, MD 21817.
